Much has been written about diet, lifestyle choices, and their effects on our health. With the advancements in technology and science, Americans still get a failing grade in health. Obesity is an epidemic affecting 70% of adults. One third of adults have diabetes or prediabetes. Cancer rates are on the rise. Overdose from prescription pain medication has climbed dramatically making it the 7th leading cause of death. The World Health Organization rates the American healthcare system 37th out of 191 countries. As a country, we have the best trained doctors and nurses, the best healthcare facilities, and cutting-edge technology. America spends more on healthcare than any other country by far. Yet we rank 37th?
We need to address the lifestyle choices we make and accept responsibility for our own health. Your health is your responsibility. Healthcare providers assist in recovery from disease, but it is our job to try and prevent it. Lack of movement and poor dietary choices are the leading cause of the health crisis we are experiencing. Most would not argue this point, yet few get involved and learn about ways to improve their health. As a society, we are no longer concerned with obtaining food for survival. Now the biggest problem we face is being overfed and under nourished.
Half pound burgers with super-sized fries and sodas at a drive-thru have become the normal meal for most. High calorie, low nutrient, pro-inflammatory meals are deleterious to health and wellness. That convenience comes with a cost.
The Standard American Diet (SAD) is loaded with Carbohydrates that have been Refined And Processed (CRAP). Instead of cost and convenience, select foods that provide nutrients. When reading food labels follow rule 1: Do not eat foods with labels. Foods with labels have a prolonged shelf life, because they are full of preservatives. You cannot leave a banana or chicken on the kitchen counter for a couple of days without them spoiling. How old are the contents of the package you are eating? What are those preservatives? Simply put, foods with labels have no life energy.
Rather than eat SAD CRAP, select fresh produce and meats. Fresh whole foods still have life supporting nutrients. It is fact that you are what you eat, choose wisely.
